The Metropolis of Lyon has unveiled the Perrache interchange metamorphosis project. An ambitious project that aims to re-enchant this place unloved by the inhabitants of the metropolis.
What if tomorrow, the Perrache exchange center – this concrete block which cuts the Presqu’île in two and where the metro, tram, bus, taxis and motorway intersect – completely changes its face? This is the objective of the project imagined by Apsis and Quartusthe two partners chosen by the Metropolis of Lyon to carry out its metamorphosis.
The 3 strong points of the future face of Lyon-Perrache
- The opening. Goodbye glass facade and escalators, the exchange hub will open to create an arch. It will – finally – make the link between Place Carnot and the SNCF station. Coworking spaces, hotel, restaurants, shops will make this place that we crossed quickly, a place where we stop.
- Eco-renovation. The rest of the exchange hub will not be destroyed but entirely eco-renovated with bio-sourced, local and reused materials. They will be able to accommodate spaces dedicated to urban logistics or the social and solidarity economy.
- Enhancement of rooftop gardens. Did you know that there were gardens on the roof of the Perrache interchange? They are open to the public, but remain relatively unknown! Tomorrow, the green roofs will be completely redesigned to become “garden terraces” for sitting down and having a drink, with a 360° view of all of Lyon and its surroundings, and 2,000 m² of vegetable garden!
It will take until 2028 for the project to be finalized. The first works will start in 2024.
“Let’s open Perrache”, a long-term project
The metamorphosis of the Perrache interchange is part of the vast project Let’s open Perrachewhich aims to facilitate the connection between the north and the south of the Presqu’ile thanks to a more comfortable crossing of the station, while simplifying access to trains and transport.
The new southern entrance to the station, which overlooks the Place des Archives, was the first major achievement of this urban project.
Second stage, after the removal of the escalators which earned the south facade the nickname of “Goldorak”: the transformation of the west vault, the underground passage which connects the Place des Archives to the Place Carnot. Mainly used by cars before, it has been completely redesigned, including lighting and appearance of the walls, to become a passage reserved for cyclists and pedestrians.
The transformation and opening of the exchange hub will complete the metamorphosis of Perrache into a link between the north and the south of the peninsula.
