A few hours ago, the 12th studio album by Metallica – 72 Seasons – was played for the first time in movie theaters around the world. Clocking in at 77 minutes, the 12-track record reaches into the band’s musical past, evoking memories of their earliest tracks. Metallica have always been masters of fast and complex guitar riffs, but now, with over 40 years of experience, they present a project with music that is timeless. Metallica released the first single from 72 Seasons, “Lux Æterna”, in late 2022. The term, which is Latin for “eternal light”, was Hetfield’s original choice for the title of the collection before they settled on 72 Seasons. As Metallica have already mentioned, the concept behind 72 Seasons stems from the first 18 years of life, namely, the role of parents in building our personality and choosing whether to remain prisoners of childhood or break free.

The title track sets the tone both sonically and thematically. The piece introduces the idea of fighting anger and inner darkness, nostalgia and growing up. Metallica is a band that has often changed its identity, and the multi-layered “If Darkness Had a Son” best represents this to fans, bringing together different eras of Metallica’s catalog in one song. On “You Must Burn!”, a tune reminiscent of their hit from The Black Album, “Sad But True,” James’ vocals stand out, sounding unlike anything the thrashers have recorded before. The single “Screaming Suicide” is an expression of real vulnerability and differs from the musicians’ previous tracks, unfolding the sensitive topic of suicide and the impact of negative thoughts on our mental health. The climax is “Inamorata”, the 11-minute record, which is also the longest song of Metallica’s career. With 72 Seasons, the legends break the facade of metal rage and search for their own truth.
Formed in 1981 by James and Lars, Metallica became one of the most influential and successful bands in history and a benchmark for all metal bands. Selling nearly 120 million albums worldwide and generating more than 15 billion streams, Metallica’s accomplishments include 9 Grammy Awards, numerous MTV Video Music Awards and a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Metallica’s 72 Seasons is released and distributed on the Bulgarian music market by Animato Music and Universal Music Group, with the media support of radio Dir.bg and Radio 1 Rock.
