Metalenz Revolutionizes 3D Face Unlock with Samsung’s ISOCELL Vizion 931 Sensor

Revolutionary 3D Face Unlock Mechanism Uses Samsung’s ISOCELL Vizion 931 Sensor

Leading optics company, Metalenz, has unveiled its groundbreaking 3D face unlock mechanism, which utilizes Samsung’s ISOCELL Vizion 931 sensor. Metalenz, backed by industry giants Intel and SDK, has successfully developed a new and innovative system for 3D depth mapping. This collaboration with Samsung further establishes the superiority of Samsung’s 3D depth mapping camera.

Metalenz’s Polar ID 3D Biometric System

Metalenz, known for designing optical systems for consumer electronics, automotive, and IoT applications, has announced the launch of its first full system 3D face biometric system called Polar ID. This groundbreaking system leverages Samsung’s ISOCELL Vizion 931 sensor as a light engine in Metalenz’s revolutionary polarization-sorting imaging system. Metalenz has a proven track record in developing imaging and sensing solutions, which are already being used in various smartphones. With the creation of Polar ID, Metalenz now offers a complete 3D face scanning, recognition, and unlock system suitable for integration in smartphones, tablets, and many other devices.

World’s Only Consumer-Grade Imaging System

Polar ID is dubbed the “world’s only consumer-grade imaging system that can sense the full polarization state of light.” Unlike other existing 3D face unlock systems that require multiple images for accurate recognition, Polar ID is able to perform with just a single image, significantly enhancing the speed and accuracy of the unlocking process. Additionally, Metalenz claims that Polar ID is 50% more cost-effective and smaller in size compared to traditional face unlocking solutions.

Partnership Enables Rapid Integration

Through its partnership with Samsung and its ISOCELL Vizion 931 sensor, Metalenz expects quick adoption of the Polar ID biometric system in the smartphone industry. Polar ID offers 3D face recognition and biometrics in the near-infrared spectrum with industry-leading quantum efficiency and advanced global shutter technology.

Evaluation and Expectations

The Polar ID system is currently being showcased at MWC 2024 in Barcelona, Spain. Visitors of the event will have the opportunity to experience the compact footprint, security, speed, and affordability of Polar ID on a smartphone reference design powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. Several smartphone brands are currently evaluating the Polar ID system, with additional evaluation kits set to be available in the coming months. It is anticipated that Polar ID will be integrated into smartphones in either the second half of this year or early next year. Moreover, this versatile system has the potential to be used in a wide range of devices, including AR/VR/MR devices, tablets, and laptops.

CY Lee, Vice President of the Sensor Sales & Marketing Team at Samsung Electronics, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration with Metalenz, stating, “Our collaboration with Metalenz is not just about combining technologies; it marks a pivotal advancement in biometric imaging capabilities, making face unlock solutions with enhanced security and affordability accessible on a global scale. We are energized to collaborate with Metalenz, a company that shares our commitment to bringing visionary solutions to the market.
