Metal Particles Found in Chocolate Cookies Sold at Supermarkets and Hema, Recall Issued

There may be metal particles in the chocolate cookies.

Six supermarkets and Hema have to recall chocolate biscuits because they may contain traces of metal particles. Or how such a recall reveals that house brands already come from the same factory. And it’s not the only example.

In concrete terms, Albert Heijn, Aldi, Colruyt, Okay, Delhaize, Jumbo and Hema must recall the packages. The cookies are always similar. “Possible presence of metal particles,” reports the food safety agency FASFC.

It will not be a coincidence, because during our Plan B private label test, chocolatier Julius Persoone also discovered that many of those ‘American cookies’ from supermarkets are very similar and probably come from the same production line. It is not the only example. In the test by Scholiertjes and Choco Leibniz, he also gave a series of those house brand cookies the same points because they were very similar. And his father Dominique Persoone also discovered during one of our tests how much speculoos spread comes from the same factory.

Private label milk

It is not unusual for supermarkets to turn to the same manufacturer. There are simply not dozens of factories that can make their own cookies, chips or soft drinks per supermarket. As long as there are no recalls in different stores, the customer will not notice that it comes from the same production line. Only when that is the case does this become clear. For example, both Jumbo and Albert Heijn recently had to recall crispy pumpkin snacks. But the best-known example is milk. More than ten years ago, private label milk briefly disappeared from various supermarkets and it turned out that it all came from the same factory.

To be clear, the same producer is not always the same as the same product. During tests we regularly see the same manufacturer on the packaging, even though the composition is different. For example, Milcobel produces ice creams for various supermarkets, but they are not the same. Supermarkets have specifications for their own brands that regularly contain their own recipes that the manufacturer must follow. This way they can easily switch to another producer without the taste changing.
