Meta Unveils New AI Features for Instagram: Photo Editing Tools, AI Stickers, Interactive Bots, and More

As part of Meta’s Connect conference last Wednesday, Mark Zuckerberg revealed several creative AI features that may be useful to some content creators and influencers. For example, users will be able to use Meta’s generative AI technology – which was revealed as Emu – To edit photos in the Instagram app.

Zuckerberg said Meta will start rolling out these photo editing and generative AI tools to Instagram in “about a month,” and Zuckerberg also said during the Connect conference that Meta’s Emu technology takes seconds to generate images.

In addition to photo editing tools, Meta is already rolling out AI stickers, which use Emu and Llama 2 technology, and higher applications of AI will also soon appear across Meta apps in the form of chatbots or AI-powered assistants. Meta will begin beta testing the feature immediately.

Here’s a full summary of the new AI features that Meta will bring to Instagram:

– New photo editing tools within the Instagram application:

Like many of the ubiquitous apps and generative AI filters on TikTok, Instagram is following suit with its own generative AI tools. Users can edit photos either through “re-styling,” which changes the artistic style of the photo such as turning the photo into a watercolor, or “Background”, which allows users to replace the image background with the description.

Any image edited using these tools “will indicate the use of artificial intelligence,” Mita wrote in a blog post.

– AI-generated stickers for use in direct messages:

Instead of sticking with the pre-loaded stickers or emojis that already exist on Instagram, Meta is rolling out a new tool that lets users create unique stickers using generative AI. Meta wrote in her blog post that the feature will be rolled out “to select English users over the next month.”

AI stickers will be available across Instagram features like direct messages and Stories, as well as on other apps like WhatsApp, Messenger, and Facebook’s Stories feature.

– Interactive AI bots – or characters:

In addition to its general AI assistant called “Meta AI,” Meta is rolling out 28 AI chatbots developed in partnership with celebrities and influencers. The first cast of characters uses the likes of celebrities like Tom Brady and Kendall Jenner, as well as popular influencers like MrBeast, LaurDIY, and Charli D. ‘Amelio, and the AI characters will have their own profiles on Instagram and Facebook as well.

– Creators will be able to create their own robots in the future:

“We’re building a platform to create AI that can help you get things done or just have fun,” Zuckerberg said. “The way it’s going to work is that people will be able to interact with these AI systems across the entire product universe.”

Zuckerberg pitched these AI bots as a potential way for creators to “engage” with their communities. These bots would need to be “approved” and “directly controlled” by their creator, Meta wrote in a blog post. Already, a large number of startups have unveiled AI tools. Similar apps allow creators to create AI versions of themselves, like Afterparty or Render Media.
