JAKARTA – Meta has shared new statistics on the number of bullying, hate speech and harassment on Facebook and Instagram. The new figures are released as Meta faces increasing scrutiny over its ability to adequately protect users and enforce its policies around the world.
Its latest report marks the first time the company has shared the “prevalence” metric around bullying and harassment on its platform. “Prevalence” is a statistic that Facebook uses to track infringing content that escapes its detection systems.
“This represents the amount of infringing content that people actually see that actually appears on someone’s screen,” company VP of Integrity Guy Rosen told reporters. Engadget, Thursday (11/11/2021).

According to Meta, the prevalence of bullying content is between 0.14% -0.15% in Facebook and between 0.05% -0.06% on Instagram. “This means bullying and harassment content is seen between 14 and 15 times per every 10,000 content views on Facebook and between 5 and 6 times per 10,000 content views on Instagram,” the company explained in a statement.
Instagram’s ability to deal with bullying and harassment of its users has received a lot of attention. Now Meta is introducing some new anti-bullying measures after several English football players detailed their experiences with racism on the app.
The company notes that this “prevalence” metric only takes into account Facebook and Instagram deleted content without user reports. That means statistics only capture a portion of all bullying content, as bullying and harassment are not always easy to identify by automated systems.
