Jakarta –
Meta released a series of updates for avatar so it can be used in more mediums. One of them is the option to use an avatar in a video call via Instagram and Messenger.
In its official statement, Meta said Instagram and Messenger users can now make video calls using avatars. This option is suitable for users who don’t want to show their face in a video call, but can still see each other with the other person.
“Sometimes we are not ready to be in front of the camera. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a third option between turning off the camera and activating the camera so that you feel more present when making a call? It’s time to use your Meta Avatar,” said Meta in his official statement, as quoted by TechCrunch , Wednesday (12/7/2023).
Judging from the short video shared by Metaverse VP Meta Vishal Shah, avatars for video calls on Instagram and Messenger are similar to Apple’s Memoji avatars on Facetime.

Avatar Meta can also move according to the user’s facial expressions and mouth movements so that it looks natural in front of the other person. The video also shows users changing their avatars to cute animals such as cats, dogs, owls and llamas.
Apart from the avatar feature for video calls, Meta also shares several updates regarding avatars. The company made by Mark Zuckerberg is testing a new, easier way to create avatars on Facebook and WhatsApp, where users simply take a selfie and choose from several recommended avatars.
Meta also announced that users can now share animated avatar stickers on Instagram Stories and Reels, Facebook Stories and Reels, Facebook comments, and via DM on Messenger and Instagram. Users can submit avatars that perform movements such as waving, dancing, or clapping.
Not only that, Meta also released the Social Sticker feature which allows a user’s avatar to join with their friends’ avatars. Users can now tag friends on Facebook Stories if they want to make their avatars look like they’re hanging out with their friends.
