Meta Platforms: Lawsuit over use of facial recognition software without user consent could be very expensive

Another lawsuit has now been filed against Meta Platforms Inc. (Nasdaq: FB). The plaintiff is the US state of Texas, which is citing the company in court for collecting facial recognition data without consent.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton alleges that Facebook’s parent company illegally collected biometric data from users on servers without their consent, which would be illegal.

Meta Platforms announced in November 2021 that it would shut down its facial recognition system, which can use AI to recognize users’ faces in photos and then tag them.

The lawsuit against Meta platform was filed in court yesterday, Monday. The company previously settled a similar dispute with a settlement that cost the company $650 million.

In the current lawsuit, Meta Platforms violated state law by not obtaining users’ prior consent to the collection of their biometric data and by not deleting the data within a reasonable period of time.

Meta Platforms collected facial recognition data from photos of users, regardless of whether the people depicted were also users of the platform.
