Meta lays off employees from WhatsApp, Instagram and Reality Labs

Meta laid off people across several of its teams, including WhatsApp, Instagram and Reality Labs, on October 16.

Online, employees who worked at Facebook in the recruiting, legal operations and design teams say they have been laid off.

From TechCrunchMeta indicates however that the Threads, recruitment and legal teams have not been affected.

Some employees have been offered new roles, even new contracts, or the opportunity to take redundancy pay.

In 2022, Meta laid off 11,000 people, or 13% of its employees, after hiring aggressively during the pandemic. In 2023, the company laid off 10,000 more employees and eliminated 5,000 job offers that were still unfilled.

In this specific case, the company did not wish to communicate the exact number of people laid off.
