“Meta” launches “Threads” in the European Union, months after its global launch
Today, Thursday, “Meta” launched its social network “Threads” in the European Union, a service that is considered a direct competitor to the X platform, and was not yet available in the countries of the Union.
The European Union version of Threads comes with a feature to adapt to the rules in force on the continent, allowing you to choose between linking to an Instagram account or sacrificing certain features during use.
Meta had launched Threads worldwide in July, but preferred to delay the launch in the European Union to allow time to study the implications of the European rules.
Meta President Mark Zuckerberg wrote on his Threads account: “Today we are opening Threads to more countries in Europe. Hello everyone.”
Through this platform for short blogs linked to “Instagram”, which includes features similar to those of “X”, “Meta” openly aims to compete with the network that Elon Musk bought.
Meta is wary of European rules
Threads quickly attracted tens of millions of subscribers around the world this summer, but Meta needed time to explore the implications of the European Union’s digital markets law, which tightens competition rules.
“In order to comply with European rules,” the group offered an additional option intended for users from the European Union and the European Economic Area, allowing them to use Threads even without an Instagram account, but with fewer features.
On the other hand, as in the rest of the world, only Instagram users can create an account on Threads, with one account linked to the other.
Meta indicated that “citizens of the European Economic Area (27 countries of the European Union, Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein) will be able to choose to create an account on Threads linked to their Instagram account, which will allow them to benefit from the same experience as all other citizens of the world.” Or using Threads without a profile, but in this case “without the ability to interact with the content.”
Users without a profile will be able to “browse Threads app content, search for accounts, share content by copying links or sharing the platform, and report Threads content.”
