Meta has started providing its headset operating system to hardware makers. Through the licenses, Lenovo and Asus, among others, will be able to use the Horizon OS for their own VR glasses. There will also be an exclusive Meta Quest for Xbox.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and WhatsApp, among others, licenses its Horizon OS to other companies. The operating system should control new VR glasses from Asus and Lenovo, among other things. In blog Meta also reports that it is working on a developer framework to make it easier to port mobile apps to the same Horizon OS.
In this way, it seems that the technical giant is taking the first steps to become a supplier of operating systems, in the style of, for example, Android or Microsoft, but for the virtual reality market (currently ) much less. The company already has plans for that market, with Horizon’s social level in its software. That open world (can we even say metaverse?) should allow users of the headsets to interact with each other in 3D. There is now also a 2D version on the web. It won’t surprise you that Meta wants to build ads and e-shops into this in the future.
Xbox headset
Meta has been releasing the Meta Quest (original Oculus Quest) headsets for virtual reality for several years. It is a series of light glasses with controllers that are mainly used for video games. In a video, CEO Mark Zuckerberg also recommends the devices as a way to work more easily from home or while traveling.
The market for this type of device is small, with the Apple Vision Pro as a very expensive competitor. But Zuckerberg clearly wants to make his headphones a more open platform than Apple. The licenses to other hardware manufacturers show this. In addition to Asus and Lenovo, Meta has also announced a deal with Microsoft for an Xbox VR headset. It would be a limited version of Meta Quest (3 or later), which will be bundled with controllers and Xbox Game Pass.
