“Meta” is considering creating an alternative to “Twitter”

Facebook’s parent company, Meta, is considering creating an alternative to the popular short-blogging app, Twitter.

“We are exploring creating a standalone, decentralized social network for sharing text updates,” a Meta spokesperson told The Register. “We believe there is an opportunity for a separate space where content creators and public icons can share updates on their interests in a timely manner.”

As a decentralized service, which means that users can set up their own mini-networks, Meta’s offering will be similar to established services such as Mastodon. Jack Dorsey, co-founder and former chairman of Twitter, is working on a similar decentralized service called Bluesky that can only be tested by selected users so far.
