Meta drops its competing headset to Apple’s Vision Pro

The Meta Quest Pro will not have a successor. This has just been confirmed by the American brand itself.

Known internally by the code name “La Jolla,” the mixed reality headset was to follow on from the Meta Quest Pro, which launched in late 2022 for €1,800. Meta is finally stopping the costs with this range, as reported by The Information.

Too expensive a design

The Meta Quest Pro 2, which was apparently scheduled for release in 2027, was designed to compete with the ambitious Apple Vision Pro (recently available in France). A financial abyss, as can be read between the lines of the comments reported by the American media, which Meta ultimately preferred to bury.

Rumor has it that the Quest Pro 2 was supposed to feature micro-OLED displays of the same range as those found on Apple’s headset, which would make an already hefty bill explode. A difficult budget to stick to for the brand, which clearly wanted to market its new high-end headset for under $1,000 – four times less than the Vision Pro.

While virtual and mixed reality may seem like a distant memory for Meta (which invested heavily in the metaverse in 2022 before quickly pulling out in favor of theartificial intelligence), the brand assures that it is still interested in this technology.

But one helmet chases another at Meta. According to The Vergea VR headset more affordable than the Meta Quest 3 (€549) is currently in production at Meta and could even be released before the end of 2024.
