Meta CEO Zuckerberg Compares Apple Vision Pro to Meta Quest 3
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently released an Instagram video comparing the Apple Vision Pro to the Meta Quest 3, Meta’s latest headset. In the video, Zuckerberg highlighted several reasons why he believes the Meta Quest 3 outshines Apple’s offering.
Key Advantages of the Meta Quest 3 over Apple Vision Pro
- Price: The Meta Quest 3 is 7 times less expensive than the Vision Pro.
- High-Quality Passthrough: The Quest 3 offers high-quality passthrough with large screens, similar to the Vision Pro.
- Comfort: The Quest 3 is 120 grams lighter and touted to be more comfortable.
- Wireless Experience: Unlike the Vision Pro, the Quest 3 is wire-free, facilitating seamless movement.
- Enhanced Display: The Quest 3 boasts a wider field of view and a brighter screen compared to the Vision Pro.
- Clearer Image: Unlike the Vision Pro, the Quest 3 minimizes motion blur, providing a crisper experience.
- Precision and Accuracy: The Quest 3 offers precision controllers and hand tracking, with the latter being more accurate than the Vision Pro.
- Immersive Content Library: The Quest 3 boasts a more extensive collection of immersive content.
- Multifunctional: Users can enjoy YouTube and Xbox on the Quest 3.
In discussing Apple’s entry into the mixed reality domain, Zuckerberg expressed surprise at the tradeoffs Apple had to make to incorporate a higher resolution screen, sacrificing comfort and ergonomics. He emphasized that being the leader in a new product category is not guaranteed and expressed Meta’s ambition to emerge victorious in this next generation.
“Now look, I know that some fanboys get upset whenever somebody dares to question if Apple is going to be the leader in a new category, but the reality is that every generation of computing has an open and a closed model. And yeah, in mobile, Apple’s closed model won. It’s not always that way. If you go back to the PC era, Microsoft’s open model was the winner. In this next generation, Meta is going to be the open model, and I really want to make sure that the open model wins out again. The future is not yet written.”
The Meta Quest 3, launched in October, features dual 2K LCD panels in contrast to the 4K microLED displays of the Apple Vision Pro. The Quest 3 weighs 515 grams, whereas the Vision Pro weighs between 600 to 650 grams, and does not require an additional battery pack. It is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset, equipped with 8GB of RAM, and includes Touch Plus controllers.
Meta, previously known as Facebook Reality Labs, has already released several headsets, including the Oculus Quest, Oculus Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro. In contrast, Apple is set to continue its foray into the market, with rumors suggesting that the next-generation version of its headset will be more affordable. Apple CEO Tim Cook referred to the Vision Pro as “tomorrow’s technology today” when unveiling its price point.
