Meta Announces Quest 3: More Powerful and Thinner VR Glasses With Higher Resolution Screens and Color Cameras

Meta has announced the Quest 3, a pair of VR glasses that will be more powerful and thinner than the Quest 2. The new glasses will also have higher resolution screens and color cameras. The company will announce more about the glasses at the end of September.

The Quest 3 will get a Snapdragon soc, just like its predecessor, but meta doesn’t say what it’s about. The soc’s GPU is said to be twice as powerful as the one in the XR2 that Meta uses for the Quest 2. The company also says that the resolution of the screens has been increased, without going into details. The LCDs of the Quest 2 have a resolution of 1832×1920 pixels per eye. Meta also says that the goggles will be forty percent thinner, which should improve comfort.

The new glasses will have color cameras to see the outside world with the VR glasses on. Meta wants to use those cameras for mixed reality applications, where virtual elements are projected over the physical world. The company shows an example of someone playing a virtual tabletop game on a physical table.

Like the Quest 2, the Quest 3 also gets controllers, which Meta says has improved. Meta talks about lightweight Touch Plus controllers with haptic feedback. The controllers have triggers, joysticks and buttons. They no longer have the tracking rings, as they would no longer be needed due to “improvements in tracking technology.” The headset can also handle the Touch Pro controllers and supports hand tracking.

Meta says that the glasses will be for sale from 499 dollars, converted with VAT, that is 563 euros. The glasses should appear in the fall, also in Belgium and the Netherlands. The headset comes with 128GB of storage as standard, although the company will also offer glasses with more storage for a fee. It says it wants to share more about the glasses at the Connect fair on September 27.
