On May 1st, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is once again transformed into the most exclusive fashion event of the year. There are two surprises on the gala guest list.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s (MET) Costume Institute’s new exhibition is dedicated to German designer Karl Lagerfeld. Under the title “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”, the career of the German fashion designer is summarized in around 150 looks. As is well known, not only the curators have to deal with the homage, but also the guests of the famous MET Gala. The appropriate dress code for May 1st is “In honor of Karl”.
The festival has always taken place under the patronage of the US American “Vogue” since 1948. None other than editor-in-chief Anna Wintour has chaired the event to this day. British poet Michaela Coel, actress Penélope Cruz, tennis player Roger Federer and the singer Dua Lipa are serving as co-chairs this year, and the event’s traditional goal is to raise millions in donations, which will then go to the costume institute.
Choupette comes by
Whether he’s worked for Chanel, Chloé, Fendi or his own label, Karl Lagerfeld has had an incredible impact on fashion. And even if he was always of the opinion that fashion didn’t belong in a museum, Anna Wintour is convinced that he would have been happy to have been recognized.
“The new exhibition, entitled Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, is a nod to the painter William Hogarth. He believed that virtuoso linework had more energy and life than a straight line. I can’t think of a better metaphor for the revolutionary impact Karl had on fashion,” Wintour told Vogue.
A special guest of honor at the gala should already be certain. It is said that Lagerfeld’s cat Choupette is to drop by. A few others are said to have received no more invitations this year. The Kardashian-Jenner clan is no longer prominent enough for Anna Wintour, they will no longer be there on May 1st. The fashion designer died on February 19, 2019 in the Paris suburb of Neuilly.
