I admit it: Rarely have I wished a single player the World Cup title as much as I did Lionel Messi (35) in Qatar. Finally the culmination of his wonderful career!
And now the genius is dragging my sentiment, which I share with millions (maybe even billions) of fans, into the dirt. Or rather: In the desert sand!
Messi has fled after Paris Saint-Germain’s 3-1 defeat by Lorient – apparently without the club’s permission. PR tour with his family in the kingdom of the blood sheikh of Saudi Arabia instead of training with his troubled team.
PSG have suspended Messi internally for two games. At the end of the season he will leave the Qatar branch in Paris anyway, with which he never really warmed up. And where he has long been the bogeyman of the ultras. They whistle when they see him on the pitch.
What an undignified end to a failed football relationship!
Messi messes up like Ronaldo
The seven-time world footballer Messi messed up the end of his career – just like the five-time champion Ronaldo (38).
He provoked his departure from Man United with ego numbers, for example disappearing from the stadium during a game and claiming a goal at the World Cup in a very lousy way because the ball had allegedly stroked his hair beforehand. Now he’s making his way through the Saudi league!
And Messi? Will he return to Barcelona? He could have become immortal if he had stayed at his then-almost-broken home club and continued playing there for a token salary. Unfortunately, he preferred the Paris coins.
In the end, are both only driven by greed for money? According to the recently published Forbes list, Ronaldo (€123m per year) and Messi (€117m) are the highest paid athletes in the world.
Should Messi now also move to Saudi Arabia, he could perhaps even overtake Ronaldo in the money table. For me he would then be the biggest relegation in world football.
