La Liga concluded that the contract between Barcelona and Lionel Messi (33) is binding and that the Argentine’s buyout clause is valid. Father and agent Jorge Messi disputes the league’s interpretation and believes the son can go free.
Barcelona confirmed last week to the news agency AP that the 33-year-old wanted to leave. Messi allegedly wanted to use a clause that allowed him to terminate the contract immediately – without Barcelona being entitled to compensation.
In a press release on Sunday, La Liga, the Spanish league association, made it clear that the buyout clause of 700 million euros is valid. La Liga made it clear that the player’s license would not be released until the clause was met.
The deadline to trigger the clause was actually June 10, but the Messi side believes the deadline can be postponed because the corona pandemic extended the season to August.
Barca insists that the deadline for the clause has expired, and points to the contractual purchase price of 700 million euros.
Messi’s father and agent, Jorge Messi, sent out a press release on Friday in which he describes La Liga as biased and claims that his son can go for free. He states that La Liga’s interpretation that the buyout clause of 700 million euros is still valid is wrong.
– Without looking at other rights in the mentioned contract and which you omit, it is obvious that the clause of 700 million euros, given clause 8.2.3.6, is not valid at all, he writes.
He refers to this point in the contract:
“This clause does not apply when the contract termination by a unilateral decision by the player takes effect from the end of the 2019/20 season.”
The news agency Reuters announced on Friday that Lionel Messi has decided to stay in Barcelona. Shortly afterwards, a correction came that there is no clarification about the future yet.
The Spanish newspaper Sphera Sports has also reported that the Argentine will have decided on Friday, but no confirmation has been received. Several Spanish newspapers report that there will be an official statement about Messi’s future on Friday.
