Lionel Messi has the opportunity to set a new record in the semifinal match between Argentina and Croatia World Cup 2022Wednesday (15/12) early morning WIB.
Messi played a big part in guiding Argentina to the semi-finals. The Paris Saint Germain star had four goals and two assists in five games.
All of La Pulga’s goals have come against Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Australia and the Netherlands.
In total, Messi has collected 10 goals and seven assists in 24 appearances at various editions of the World Cup.
A number of new records can be created if Messi is able to score goals or assist against Croatia.
Here are 5 new records Messi can create:
1. Messi has the opportunity to become the first player in World Cup history to be able to score goals and assist in four separate matches since 1996. This record was created if Messi was able to score and assist against Croatia .
2. If Argentina reaches the final, Messi will become the best player of all time in a World Cup (26 games).
3. Currently Messi equals Argentina’s record for the most goals scored in the World Cup, held by Gabriel Batistuta (10 goals). A new record can be created if La Pulga adds goals against Croatia to their coffers.
4. Messi will also equal former Germany midfielder Lothar Matthaus for the most World Cup appearances in history.
5. Messi could equal or surpass Argentine football legend Diego Maradona’s assist tally (8) at the World Cup. Currently Messi has recorded 7 assists.
