Former French footballer, Jean-Pierre Papin, has criticized the Ballon d’Or award given to Messi. Papin, who won the award in 1991, claims the Ballon d’Or will be diminished if Messi wins again because he has played fewer minutes than his rivals.
“He hasn’t even played for five months! I saw we were talking about him and I don’t understand,” Papin told Le Parisien before Messi was named the winner.
“Since winning the Copa America, what has Messi done in Paris? He’s only scored one goal in the league, three in the Champions League.”
“I’m not against Messi, he’s one of the greatest footballers in history. But this year he doesn’t deserve it,” continued the former AC Milan star in the 90s.
Disappointment with the 2021 Ballon d’Or result was also expressed by Toni Kroos, who feels Karim Benzema deserves it more. Iker Casillas was also disappointed and lost faith in the award event.
“I find it increasingly difficult to believe in these football awards,” Casillas wrote on his social media accounts as reported by Marca.
“For me, Messi is one of the five best footballers of all time, but they have to start paying attention to who was the best player that season.”
“It’s not that difficult. The others make it difficult,” Casillas said.
