Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami will compete in the first edition of the new Club World Cup in 2025 with the place reserved for a team from the United States as the host country, FIFA announced this Saturday; same day that the Argentine star achieved a second hat trick in less than a week.
Gianni Infantino, president of world soccer’s governing body, made the announcement at Inter’s stadium after Messi’s team beat the New England Revolution 6-2 and broke the MLS regular-season points record.
Inter will also host the opening match of the World Cup on June 15, 2025 at Hard Rock Stadium, the home of the American football Miami Dolphins, Infantino also announced.
Messi’s Inter, who scored a second consecutive hat trick this Saturday, had already secured first place overall in the MLS regular season, which is recognized with the Supporter’s Shield trophy.
“Congratulations on your impressive victory in the 2024 Supporters’ Shield. You have proven all season that you are the best club in the United States on the field,” Infantino said.
“In this way, I am pleased to announce that, as one of the best clubs in the world, they will have the well-deserved honor of participating in the new FIFA Club World Cup 2025 as the host club representing the United States,” said the leader.
Messi, eight-time winner of the Ballon d’Or, will thus be one of the great attractions of the first expanded edition of the Club World Cup, which will have 32 participants.
In short, the Argentine star closed a dream week, as three days earlier he led his team’s 6-0 victory against the Bolivian team, contributing with three goals and two assists.
Real Madrid, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are among the 12 European teams qualified.
Among the South American teams are the Argentine River Plate and Boca Juniors and the Brazilian Flamengo, Fluminense and Palmeiras, while the Concacaf will be the Mexican Monterrey, León and Pachuca.
The only place still vacant for the tournament will be for the winner of the Copa Libertadores
