Gerardo Martino takes over at the US club. He has coached Messi at FC Barcelona and Argentina.
Lionel Messi gets at Inter Miami a good old friend as a coach. Gerard Martino, who comes from Rosario like the 35-year-old world champion, takes over from the currently weakening team from Florida. The 60-year-old trained Messi at FC Barcelona and with the Argentina national team. “Tata is a very respected person in our sport and his track record speaks for itself,” said Inter’s co-owner David Beckham in a message.

Messi recently stressed in an interview that he would play in Miami in the future. His contract with Paris Saint Germain expired after two years, he is moving to Major League Soccer on a free transfer. However, the team is currently bottom of the table in the Eastern Conference. Messi’s first game in the Inter Miami shirt is set to be on July 21 in the League Cup opener in Miami against Mexico’s Cruz Azul.
Compatriot Martino should start work immediately after receiving the working documents. Most recently, he coached the national team of Mexico, but after the early World Cup exit he couldn’t continue there. He coached FC Barcelona from the summer of 2013 to the summer of 2014, when Messi was still playing for the Catalans. After that, Martino took over the Argentine national team for two years.
