The AppleTV+ platform unveils a documentary series retracing the signing of Lionel Messi at Inter Miami and his first steps in the North American football championship.
The AppleTV+ platform today unveils the first episodes of its new event documentary series, Messi Meets America. Dedicated to the signing of Argentine footballer Lionel Messi in the American team Inter Miami CF, the program also implicitly paints a portrait of America today.
On July 15, a page in football history was turned with the signing of Lionel Messi for Inter Miami, a soccer team playing in Major League Soccer (the North American championship). A transfer which comes shortly after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, who left to join the Al-Nassr team in Saudi Arabia.
The arrival of the Argentine genius was the top priority of David Beckham, the legendary former footballer now owner of the Miami team. Despite two lackluster seasons under the colors of PSG, Lionel Messi finally won the world champion title which eluded him during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
A few months after this title which made him the equal of the other Argentinian icon Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi this time confronts his legend with that of the Brazilian Pelé who wore the colors of New York Cosmos at the end of the years 70 (and whose epic story is recounted in a fascinating documentary).
The American Revolution
Generally, the signing of a player in the North American championship is synonymous with pre-retirement. Before him, emblematic players paved the way to introduce MLS to the general public: David Beckham (LA Galaxy) Thierry Henry (New York Red Bulls), Alessandro Nesta (Montreal Impact) and Wayne Rooney (DC United) notably.
Beyond the sporting aspect, the signing of Lionel Messi was also a genius marketing move. Providing unprecedented exposure to this league where football is still called “soccer”, the arrival of the Pulga also made it possible to fill MLS stadiums.

“All the tickets were sold in less than ten minutes, we haven’t seen that since Taylor Swift came,” says an FC Dallas manager in the second episode of the series. Another consequence of the arrival of the Argentinian prodigy: a sharp increase in ticket prices (from 40 dollars to several hundred dollars for the cheapest seats!).
The start of a Messiemania?
It is therefore this phenomenon, which we could already describe as Messiemania, that the new documentary series Messi meets America, available on AppleTV+ and myCANAL, traces. Three episodes are available to watch now, and others already in production will be broadcast later this season.
The Argentine’s most die-hard fans won’t learn much on a sporting level. But the series is nevertheless worth a watch when it focuses on the impact of this arrival on Latin American communities across the country, but also on the media aspect of this transfer.
In the United States, MLS matches are also broadcast on AppleTV+. In France, where the platform does not have the rights to broadcast the North American championship, this documentary, primarily produced for promotional reasons, will nevertheless be able to satisfy Messi fans and football enthusiasts.

However, we could regret the lack of perspective that emerges from this documentary. Messi’s thunderous debut recounted in the series gives the impression of wanting to write the legend before it is actually established. This instantaneous side therefore offers an original, but nevertheless superficial, look at Lionel Messi’s American adventure.
We will therefore only have to hope that the coming months will offer enough content and twists and turns to convince us that this series really deserved to see the light of day. Beyond any commercial approach, of course.
The documentary series Messi Meets America can be found now on AppleTV+, available via the myCANAL application.
