Marseille –
Ambitions are gone Paris Saint Germain to win the treble this season. Lionel Messi et al just got knocked out in the last 16 round French Cup this season after being silenced by their eternal rival, Marseille with a score of 1-2.
Playing at the Stade Velodrome, Thursday (9/2/2023), the hosts took the lead in the 31st minute through an Alexis Sanchez penalty that outwitted Gianluigi Donnarumma. 12 right kicks were given after Sergio Ramos’ violation of Cengiz Under in the forbidden box.
But Ramos managed to atone for his sins in first-half injury time. The Spanish defender completed Neymar’s corner with a header into the right corner of the Marseille goal guarded by Pau Lopez. Score 1-1 lasted until halftime.
In the second half, Marseille took the lead again in the 57th minute. Starting from an attack that was thwarted by the PSG rearguard, Ruslan Malinovskyi grabbed a wild ball on the edge of the penalty box with a hard shot that hit the top left corner of the goal.
The remaining time, PSG tried to catch up, but Marseille’s rearguard proved to be tougher in this match. The 2-1 score for Igor Tudor’s squad lasted until it was over.
Who will be the next opponent for Marseille will only be known through the draw after all the round of 16 matches have been completed. However, the quarter-final match has been scheduled to be held on February 28.
