The profile icon is especially useful when group members have identical names or don’t have a profile photo. Specifically, if a group member has no profile picture or it is hidden, WhatsApp will show an empty default profile picture.
It is not yet clear when the feature will finally be introduced for all users. However, previous beta features have shown that users do not have to wait too long.
