Kryptomessenger Signal introduces the option to assign a PIN with the latest version of its app. This is assigned to the account used and is used to restore data if, for example, the smartphone is lost or the device is changed. For this purpose, a profile-encrypted backup of profile data, settings and local contacts is stored on the signal server. Chat messages are left out.
The PIN must have at least four digits and can also be alphanumeric on request. The developers emphasize that they have no way to restore or reset the PIN in the event of loss. However, a new PIN can also be assigned if you forget the old one. So that the PIN is not forgotten, it should be queried when using the service at certain intervals that expand over time.
Registration lock possible
If you do not find a request for PIN assignment on the start screen, you can also call up the function via “Settings”, “Data protection” and then “Create a PIN”. A registration lock can also be set up there: This makes it necessary to enter the PIN as an additional security feature as soon as a user registers his phone number again with Signal.
