Messenger extends “end-to-end” encryption to video and audio

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Messenger, a short message application from Facebook Inc, expands encryption end-to-end from what was originally just text messages, now to video and audio calls.

“People expect their messaging apps to be secure and private, and with these new features, we’re giving them more control over how private their calls and chats are,” Messenger wrote on their official blog.

Messenger already implemented encryption end-to-end since 2016, however, limited to text messages only. In the past year, the volume of video and audio calls on the platform has increased, reaching 150 million video calls a day.

Technology end-to-end-encryption nothing new in instant messaging apps. WhatsApp, which is still in the same group as Messenger, has been implementing this technology for a long time.

Thanks to this encryption technology, only the sender and recipient of the message can access the conversation. Platform organizers, such as Facebook, cannot see the contents of the message.

Encryption end-to-end become the standard in instant messaging applications, among other things to protect users from hackers.

Messenger is also testing encryption end-to-end for group calls and messages, this applies to video and audio calls as well. They also plan to provide a feature of who can contact users and who can’t.

Facebook is also piloting an end-to-end encryption option for private messages, DMs, on Instagram.

In addition to the encryption update, Messenger has also updated the Disappearing Messages temporary messaging feature, which is an option of duration from 5 seconds to 24 hours.
