What does Palm Sunday actually represent?
From the point of view of the Orthodox Church, the Feast of Flowers represents the Entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, before the Passion he went through for the salvation of mankind. Precisely for this reason, the Flowers are also called Passion Sunday and represent the most important celebration that announces the Resurrection. All four Gospels, Mark, Matthew, Luke and John, speak of this event.
The Saturday before Palm Sunday is called Lazarus Saturday. On that day, Jesus Christ resurrected Lazarus, four days after he had died. That is why, at the Entry into Jerusalem, the Lord Jesus Christ was received with flowers by the people gathered to see him. Fascinated by the miracle accomplished by Jesus, they acclaimed him and were convinced that he is the king announced by the prophets.
Nowadays, the custom is kept that on Palm Sunday, the faithful who go to church bring willow branches, to be consecrated by the priests. They are a symbol of the olive and palm branches with which Jesus Christ was greeted in Jerusalem.
