Chinese President Xi Jinping vowed today to promote “world peace” in a New Year message to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, Chinese state media reported.
“In the face of rapid changes that we have not seen in a century and the turbulent international situation, China and Russia will continue to walk hand in hand, on the righteous path of remaining non-aligned, committed to non-conflict,” Xi Jinping said. in his message to the Russian president, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
It was not clarified by the Chinese government whether the two leaders spoke by phone or not.
China presents itself as a neutral actor in the conflict in Ukraine and officially supports efforts to achieve a “political settlement” of the conflict, which Beijing has however carefully avoided condemning.
But the Americans and Europeans accuse Beijing of providing crucial economic support to Russia, allowing Moscow to continue the war that is about to close three years.
In early December, the European Union added four Chinese companies to its blacklist because, according to it, they supply critical components for the manufacture of drones and microprocessors to the Russian defense industry.
“No matter how the international situation develops, China will remain firmly committed to deepening its reforms as a whole, promoting modernization with Chinese characteristics and contributing to world peace,” said Mr. Si, according to CCTV.
The two leaders highlight their excellent personal relationship. Xi Jinping calls the Russian counterpart his “best friend”. Vladimir Putin calls his Chinese counterpart a “reliable ally.”
According to CCTV, Mr. Xi recalled that 2024 marked the 75th anniversary of the restoration of bilateral diplomatic relations, an “important milestone” for them.
“After 75 years of fluctuations, China-Russia relations have gradually become more mature and stable,” Xi Jinping added.
