Message from the Surgeon General: Award of a contract for the Federal Health Care Claims Processing Service

September 6, 2024 – Defense News

The Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) provide their personnel with a wide range of health benefits and services, including coverage for medical, dental and other treatments provided by health professionals, supplies and preventative health care, and prescription drugs.

Although the delivery of health services to active military personnel is primarily provided by CAF clinics, these services may also be outsourced to provincial health care systems, institutions and private practitioners due to staff shortages or specialized needs (e.g., MRIs, cardiovascular care, eye exams, etc.).

Medavie Blue Cross was awarded the contract to administer claims from Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) in 1989, in addition to those from the CAF and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) since 1999. With the current contract ending, VAC (with support from the CAF and the RCMP) has launched a procurement process to ensure that the Federal Health Claims Processing Service (FHCPS) can continue to provide health benefits and services to Veterans, the RCMP, the CAF, and other eligible members.

The procurement process was conducted in an open, fair and competitive manner and there will be no changes to benefits and services for CAF personnel throughout the process. If you need to submit a request, visit the FTSDSS clerk at your local CAF clinic.

Providing high quality health care to our CAF members remains our top priority, and through this competitive process we will be able to ensure that the standard of care is maintained.

Thank you, merci, Meegwetch,
