Message from Alphonso Davies to Paralympic refugees

Davies, who plays for the Canadian national team and for Bayern Munich, has been an ambassador for the United Nations refugee agency since last March.

His message to Paralympic athletes is that they have the power to inspire and change lives.

The biggest Paralympic event will start tomorrow and you will be at the heart of it, congratulations! writes the soccer star in his open letter.

You must be nervous, but that’s okay. When I play for FC Bayern Munich or for Canada, I still have butterflies in every game.

Know that any time you go into the water, prepare to launch or enter the stadium, you will not be alone. The planet is behind you, especially the 82 million displaced people, 12 million of whom live with a disability.

Davies himself a refugee

Alphonso Davies knew the refugee camps. His parents left Liberia to escape the raging civil war and ended up in a camp in Ghana. This is where Davies was born. His family came to Canada when he was 5 years old. She first settled in Windsor, Ontario before settling for good in Edmonton, Alberta.

Few people understand the journey you have been on. I am one of those in the know, and this experience has forged who I am.

I was born in a refugee camp, my family fled the war. I understand that it can be difficult to talk about the past, the experiences you have had, the things you have seen and the discrimination you have faced.

I have read your stories and learned from your journeys. You are the bravest sports team in the world today.

Alphonso Davies goes on to say he will watch the refugee team enter the Olympic stadium in Tokyo at the opening ceremony.
