Merzig Flag football tournament of the Merzig Mustangs: Proceeds will go to the flood victims on the Ahr.

The flag footballers of the “Merzig Mustangs” are organizing a charity tournament on Saturday, August 14th, starting at 10 am on the sports field of the FSV Hilringen. All income from the sale of drinks, food, donations and the raffle will be donated and will benefit the flood victims in the Ahr valley. In addition, a Frankfurt Galaxy helmet with signatures will be auctioned.

Eight teams take part in this tournament, including the flag football teams of the Trier Bieber, the White Terriers from Illingen, the Mamer Warriors from Luxembourg and the Mustangs. The other four teams are newbies to flag football but didn’t hesitate to support the fundraiser. These teams are one team from FSV Hilhaben (soccer), one team from Junge Union Merzig and two teams from HSV Merzig-Hilhaben (handball).

Flag football is a variant of American football. The rules are almost the same. An important difference: body contact is not allowed. The name Flag Football is derived from the flags on the belt (see photo above). If these are torn off by the opponent, the game is stopped at that point. The flag pulling is to be equated with the physical contact in American football.
