Mery Racauchi. An Argentine conquering New York

The Argentine designer and singer released her first song in Spanish with the single “Bad Timing” that she wrote with Mechi Pieretti and has the collaboration of Lautaro Rodríguez.

In 2011 she started with her clothing brand that ended up taking her from Buenos Aires to New York. In June of last year his first musical single “AT 11:11” was released with the participation of Lily Lane Halpern. The mixture of these two passions is leading Mery Racauchi to achieve something millions dream of: earning a place in the city that never sleeps.

What similarities are there between the Buenos Aires art scene and the New York one?

I think that the Buenos Aires and New York art scene have a lot of things in common, fashion is super important for both, I think that in recent years in Argentina it was implemented to use super playful and original looks, as they use here. Trap music became fashionable in both places, and many talents emerged from humble neighborhoods without families to help them succeed.

How do your various artistic facets combine in each job?

I started as a fashion designer and for me fashion and music are very connected, it is very important to have good looks to be a unique and original artist and it is also good to be able to make music for clothing campaigns. In the near future I want to be able to design all my looks for video clips and tours.

How did you discover your different vocations?

Since I was 5 years old I have been making clothes for my dolls, I always liked to sew by hand, make bracelets, knit, add details to clothes, dye, everything that was possible for my age, then I started making clothes for myself and my friends and one day I started a Facebook to sell divers. A year later a lot of Argentine celebrities wanted to wear my clothes and it became super viral. The following year I decided to open a store in Palermo Soho. Then for 2016 I decided to move to NYC and continue with my brands here, and after two years of being here and meeting a lot of people who were in the music environment, I said, I have to do it, it’s my dream. And that’s how it started. When I was a girl I also took singing and guitar lessons but nothing too serious.

Do you think that the artist has to be multifaceted to succeed in today’s world?

I think it’s super important to be able to do more than one thing, I think you have to start with one, but then expand. I get bored if I always do the same thing. And people like to see different facets, in a world where everything happens so fast I think it is important to be able to do many things.

How was your experience on “Uncut Gems”?

My experience at Uncut Gems was very funny, it all started when I was outside Matcha Bar and two girls approached me and asked me if I wanted to appear in a movie with Adam Sandler, obviously I said yes, I didn’t understand much and I thought it was a lie. They asked me for my email and they sent me thousands of questionnaires and their info and I saw that it was a casting agency for TV and movies.

After a month I went to the recording set, it was for the scene that was filmed in 1OAK the bowling alley in Manhattan. As soon as I arrived they gave me a special tape and told me to cover the cameras on the phone, and they told me there was going to be a very special guest. After a while The Weeknd appeared, I couldn’t believe it. Basically the scene was singing while The Weeknd did his performance at the bowling alley, there was also Trinidad James, with whom I later made the song Cookies and Cream.

How would you describe your latest single “Bad Timing”?

Bad Timing is my first song in Spanish, I wrote it with Mechi Pieretti. She is a genius who recently released the song “Solita” and now the remix with Cazzu is coming.

We went to school together with Mechi and this was like a reunion, I had an idea, I wrote it and she helped me make it a hit. For me Bad Timing is a pop song that is good to dance and also to listen to when you are there quietly relaxing a bit.

How do you imagine post-pandemic fashion going to be?

I think street style is here to stay. But I also think that a lot of strange people can dress super classy and in heels. So a bit of everything, but comfort is key these days, lots of jogging and running shoes that allow you to dance and tiktoks.

What are your goals for the next year?

For next year I want to be able to have the first collection for Mery World (my new street style brand) and the first collection for Mery World Argentina. And to be able to get at least 5 songs with video clips. On the other hand, continue with Mery Playa, my brand of bikinis, and add products that are related to the beach but that are not bikinis.
