The Christian Democratic Party, represented by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, suffered losses in elections in two federal states on Sunday, March 14, according to preliminary results. This outcome could also affect the party’s chances in the upcoming Bundestag elections in September.
New members were elected in Rhineland-Palatinate and the neighboring, economically strong Baden-Württemberg, where the Christian Democratic Party has historically enjoyed great support.
These elections were seen as the first major political test this year, when new representatives will be elected in a total of six federal states. The election of representatives at the national level will take place in September.
Previous polls have shown that Merkel’s party has lost popularity due to the slow vaccination process and the restrictions imposed during the pandemic.
The party’s fame has also been damaged by several scandals. For example, at the beginning of last week, Nicholas Lebel, a representative of the Christian Democrats in Baden-Württemberg and a member of the Bundestag, announced his resignation due to a mask scandal.
