23% of voters voted for the CDU in Baden-Württemberg and 26% in Rhineland-Palatinate, according to polls conducted by the public service broadcasters ZDF and ARD.
In both federal states, the CDU has an unprecedented level of voter support.
As a result of Sunday’s election, Vinrid Krečman, a politician from the Green Party, has secured a third term as Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg. Social Democrat Malu Dreijer will also return to the post of Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate.
Support for the Eurosceptic party has declined in both Länder Alternative Germany (AfD), according to voter polls.
In Baden-Württemberg, 12.5% voted for AfD on Sunday, but in the previous elections in 2016, this political force provided 15.1% support.
In Rhineland-Palatinate, support for AfD fell from 12.6% in 2016 to 10.5% zero in the vote.
These land elections are being watched closely, as they are seen as an indicator ahead of the September 26 Bundestag elections, which will decide the successor to the current Chancellor, Angela Merkel.
