Merkel was pranked by Russian propagandists over the phone
Merkel’s representative confirmed the fact of the former chancellor’s telephone conversation with a subscriber who pretended to be the former president of Ukraine, stating that the conversation took place on January 12, 2023. Merkel’s representative also noted that the translation service of the language service of the German Foreign Ministry was used in the conversation.
According to the DPA agency, during the conversation, the former German chancellor did not say anything sensational or previously unknown. At the beginning of the conversation, Merkel expressed her wish that what was discussed “remain between” the participants in the conversation and not be distributed to the media.
During the conversation, the former head of the German government pointed to the unity of the West in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
To the phone joker’s offer to switch to the Russian language, Merkel refused. “My Russian is even worse than in 2014,” Merkel said.
