BERLIN / WASHINGTON / NEW YORK (dpa-AFX) – Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) is leaving for talks with US President Joe Biden in Washington on Wednesday. The meeting of the two is scheduled for Thursday afternoon in the White House. Merkel will also be awarded an honorary doctorate from Johns Hopkins University during her stay. The visit is intended to mark a new beginning in German-American relations after a low point in the era of Biden’s predecessor Donald Trump to mark.
Foreign Minister Heiko Maas is also currently in the USA. In New York, the SPD politician will meet UN Secretary General António Guterres on Wednesday. Among other things, efforts to find a solution to the conflict in Libya are likely to be at stake. On Thursday Maas will take part in a meeting of the UN Security Council on the subject.
Three weeks ago Maas organized a meeting of foreign ministers in Berlin together with the United Nations, at which the aim was once again to end outside interference in the conflict. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken had combined this meeting with his inaugural visit to Berlin. That’s one reason Maas doesn’t stop in Washington on his trip./mfi/DP/jha
