Angela Merkel has revealed the story behind the evening dress she wore to the opening of the Oslo opera in 2008, with Germany becoming the talk of the town.
The then 53-year-old chancellor of Germany wore a dark blue evening dress, which she teamed with a pearl necklace, and a matching bag. The look then went round the world – and sparked the ‘cleavage debate’ in Germany.

Die Welt then asked: “How much cleavage is a chancellor allowed to show?” The “Berliner Zeitung” wrote: “The power of cleavage”. And “Brigitte” wanted to know from her readers if the cleavage was a top or not.
The headlines about the politician’s appearance had crossed the line. At the time, deputy government spokesman Thomas Stegg commented and explained that Merkel was surprised by the uproar.
“The chancellor was a little taken aback. The fact that this evening gown from the Chancellor’s collection caused such a stir was not the Chancellor’s intention.’
“A woman in a man’s world”
More than 15 years later, the 70-year-old is still asked about her choice of clothes at the time.
Speaking about her book to the journalist Hazel Brugger, as Focus magazine writes, the former chancellor was quick to emphasize that she did not expect such a reaction from the press and citizens for her clothing choice. “I didn’t foresee how strong the reaction would be 16 years ago”, says the German former chancellor today.
After that, she no longer dared to experiment with her appearance. She always stayed true to her style of dressing. “Because I always thought people wouldn’t really listen to my political message if they spent all their time looking at my clothes”Merkel now explains.
At times, however, she chose bright colors because she wanted to “to stand out a little as a woman in a man’s world.”
