Merkel in a letter to Radev: The protection of the Bulgarian borders is in the interest of the entire EU – 2024-08-24 12:13:58

/ world today news/ The effective protection of the Bulgarian borders, which are external to the European Union, is in the interest of the Union and all member states. Therefore, I highly appreciate the efforts that Bulgaria is undertaking in this direction.

This is stated in a letter from the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Angela Merkel to the Head of State Rumen Radev. The letter was sent in response to the request in March of this year by the Bulgarian president at a meeting of the European Council for support from European partners to strengthen the protection of Bulgaria’s external borders, the press office of the head of state informed.

Germany will continue to commit to a fair distribution of EU duties and responsibilities in the future,” the chancellor emphasizes.

Angela Merkel also states that the Federal Republic of Germany supports Bulgaria’s efforts bilaterally, through the all-terrain vehicles provided to our country in the fall of last year. The German Chancellor thanked President Radev for the specific measures presented by him for the further strengthening of the protection of Bulgaria’s external borders. In his letter, Rumen Radev proposed to draw up an operational plan for the EU’s readiness for action, in the event of a sharp increase in migration pressure to Bulgaria, and attached detailed calculations for additional financial support for our country in the amount of 430 million euros.

In her letter to the Bulgarian head of state, Angela Merkel also notes that the European Commission should also check the request submitted by our country for providing additional assistance and develop a proposal on how to develop European solidarity support by providing funding from the “Asylum, Migration” fund and integration” and the “Internal Security” fund.

President Rumen Radev expressed Bulgaria’s position to the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, and to the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker. The Chairman of the European Commission has already confirmed to President Radev that the Commission is studying the possibilities of providing such support to Bulgaria, and Donald Tusk expressed his solidarity with the Bulgarian position during his meeting with the head of state in Sofia.
