German Chancellor Angela Merkel also believes that Vladimir Putin has an important role to play in this conflict. She has called the Russian president about the situation on the Belarusian-Polish border.
Merkel stressed that the instrumentalization of migrants by the Belarussian regime was inhumane and unacceptable, and asked President Putin to influence it. According to the Kremlin, after the talks, Putin advised Europe to speak directly with Minsk.
Merkel is discussing the situation on the Belarusian border not only with Putin, but now also with the Prime Minister of Latvia, Krišjānis Kariņš. These negotiations are taking place right now.
The Prime Minister of Latvia Krišjānis Kariņš started a meeting with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel an hour ago. It is Merkel’s farewell dinner to which Kariņš and the Prime Minister of Portugal have been invited. It is a great opportunity to discuss these issues in an informal atmosphere.
Already during the day, Kariņš had several meetings with German politicians, where the discussion shows that Germany understands that events on the Belarusian border are happening with Putin’s blessing and that this is not just a problem for Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, but an attack on the EU’s external border. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas called for new EU sanctions against Belarus, the fifth round of sanctions.
Is Germany also being asked for any specific help to normalize the situation on the Belarusian border? “It simply came to our notice then [nevajag]. We deal with ourselves very professionally. The main thing is that we, as the EU, can address third countries to address the problem of the country of origin, to address the participation of airlines in this process in Belarus. Because Belarusians can only bring people in because they are transported by airlines and their countries of origin allow it. This is where Europe has a big role to play. That is Europe’s answer to this – we are not alone here, “said Kariņš.
Of course, Germany is also most directly affected by the hybrid attack on Alexander Lukashenko’s regime, as most people crossing the border want to go further.
Merkel is discussing not only the situation on the Belarusian border, but also energy development and climate policy. The Prime Minister of Latvia presented Merkel with amber beads and silver.
