Merkel defends a very rational agreement on Russian gas

BERLIN – Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel says she does not regret her decision to sign a natural gas deal with Russia during her 16 years in power.

Merkel said Moscow has long been a “reliable energy supplier” and has offered lower prices than its competitors.

Speaking to reporters at the Lisbon event, Merkel explained that Germany has long been trying to move away from coal as an energy source.

According to him, Russian natural gas is the best option available as Berlin aims to “achieve a CO2-free form of energy”.
