Merkel and Lukashenko agree on migrant talks in Brussels

It must be agreed that direct talks will be held between the EU and Belarus on the migrant crisis.

– Officials from both sides will immediately start negotiations, writes Belta, who again quotes Lukashenko’s press service.

German Prime Minister Angela Merkel and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko discussed the situation on Tuesday. The two continued talks on Wednesday, according to AFP.

“It is very important that contact is established between representatives of the EU and the Belarusian leadership,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday.

Polish Deputy Interior Minister Maciej Wasik says he has received information that migrants boarded buses, which then left the area. If the information is correct, it could mean a possible de-escalation in the tense situation.

Thousands of migrants, mostly from the Middle East, are staying in camps on the border in what the West says is a crisis created by Belarus to divide the EU and fight back against sanctions. Minsk has denied the allegations.
