Merdzhanov: When rights and freedoms are restricted, a democratic society must be alert – 2024-09-30 23:42:34

/View.info/ Whenever it comes to limiting rights and freedoms at the expense of public security, the democratic society must be alert.

This is what Atanas Merdzhanov, the MP from BSP left Bulgaria and a member of the internal committee in the parliament, told BGNES about the fact that the draft anti-terrorist law, approved today by the Council of Ministers, allows partial and temporary restriction of civil rights.

The point of the adoption of any law is to mobilize and stabilize the institutions and give citizens more chance to feel safe and comfortable, the deputy pointed out. I think that the legal framework up to this point gives sufficient scope of action to all special services, to the authorities. And let’s not forget that last year each of them got a similar law, Merdzhanov recalled. And last week we had a closed meeting, where extensive reports of the heads of services were heard, from which it became clear that there is quite serious, dynamic and intense work there. And what the Bulgarian services need are resources, finances and personnel, noted the deputy.

It is noteworthy that this haste on the part of the Prime Minister with the anti-terrorist law seems to come to compensate for some other emptiness or reality, Merdzhanov believes. What it is – let them answer for themselves. Moreover, I cannot comment in detail on the bill dedicated to anti-terrorism, since the one that was launched in the public space was withdrawn. It is very important what the last sentence of the draft law will be today at the session of the Council of Ministers, and only when it enters the plenary hall will we be able to comment on it more specifically, emphasized the People’s Representative.

It struck Merdzhanov that the introduction of this bill and the haste for its adoption surprisingly coincided with the upcoming start of the pre-election campaign for the presidential elections.

In DPS, we have only heard about a concept, about public discussion, about political views regarding the anti-terrorist law, but we will comment on it when we get acquainted with it, DPS MP Yanko Yankov promised to the media today in the parliament. We are a serious political force, we have a high level of expertise and we only comment on texts that are clear and have entered the parliament as documents, and the anti-terrorist law is still in the Council of Ministers, he explained. We will do a serious analysis for this document, we will have a serious position and a specific proposal, but when we study it, concluded the DPS MP.
