Bangkok’s Mahachulalongkorn Royal University is hosting an interfaith conference on the theme “Karuṇā and Agape” for Healing Wounded Humanity and Earth from November 13 to 16 in Thailand. It is a collaborative initiative between the Vatican’s Dicastery for Interfaith Dialogue and the Thai Bishops’ Committee and the hosting university.
Buddhists and Christians from various countries including Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Singapore, Sri Lanka, South Korea, Thailand and England will participate in this initiative.
Emphasizing the importance of the event, Pope Francis asked Laudato Si Vedi, who promotes it, to continue to pray and expressed his gratitude to them. The purpose of the conference is to strengthen the friendship and mutual understanding established through dialogue with Buddhist partners around the world, especially in Thailand. The discussion will find common steps to heal the wounds of humanity and the Earth.
The opening ceremony will include greetings from local authorities and representatives of other religions in Thailand. It also included a tree-planting ceremony for conference attendees to symbolize their commitment to care and healing.
The focus on “karuna” (compassion in Buddhism) and “agape” (unconditional love in Christianity) highlights how values shared by both religions can be harnessed for the good of society and the environment. The conference looks forward to constructive dialogue and collaboration for the well-being of a global community facing many challenges.
