On Sunday, Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s reign at Manchester United was over. Again stands a club, which apparently has no plan for the way forward.

The press release stated that the club will now be led by Michael Carrick in the coming weeks. A temporary coach, who will be replaced by a new temporary coach, before the season after hiring the person who will rebuild the club.

– He has brought dignity back to Manchester United

– If Manchester United was a submarine, which yesterday came to the surface to get rid of Solskjær, then it is very unclear who is ready on the pier to go on board, as the new captain. It is also unclear which direction the submarine will go before it goes under water again.

This is how United.no journalist Eivind B. Holth describes the situation in Manchester United.

– This is perhaps the most critical thing about the whole dismissal of Solskjær. That it does not seem to be a plan for where to go next. Solskjær gave Ed Woodward a long-term project to believe in after six years of identity crisis. Now those plans are on ice. The feeling is that you are standing on bare ground, says Holth.

Merciless verdict on the United management: – Seems totally unplanned

After Sir Alex Ferguson resigned in 2013, the club has tried many different solutions. First out was Ferguson’s choice, David Moyes. The hard-working Scot. Next was the experienced Louis van Gaal, but after only earning the club an FA Cup title in two years, he also had to leave the job.

Trophy guarantor José Mourinho was next to try to rebuild the club. The Portuguese won the Europa League and the League Cup, but it did not take long before the problems arose. Thus, the club management again had to realize that they had missed.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær was given the task of leading the club out of the season, but after 14 victories in 19 games, he got the job permanently. The Norwegian did not win any titles, but he gave the fans hope for a better future. Something they had not felt since Ferguson’s era.

Now they are on bare ground again.

– Unless they have an agreement with a manager for the summer, this seems totally unplanned. The plan was all the way to stand load and burst with Solskjær, but then they did not do it in the end. Now they are left on reasonably bare ground. It is the same group of players, who will try to achieve it with a fairly similar coaching team, says TV 2’s football expert Simen Stamsø-Møller.

– How do you think United’s management will come out after this handling?

– They have failed again. There is no doubt about that. They talk about longevity, but that’s just nonsense. Long-term is not a couple of months with bad results, so I do not buy it anymore. Had they really been behind it, then Solskjær would have had the opportunity to continue. Solskjær has not changed in recent months, it is the players who have been miserable.

I think it is disturbing that several different managers are mentioned for the job

The names of possible heirs after Solskjær have flourished throughout the weekend. Mauricio Pochettino, Zinedine Zidane, Erik ten Hag, Brendan Rodgers and Luis Enrique have all been mentioned.

Big manager name, but disturbing thinks United journalist Eivind B. Holth.

– The main proof that there is no plan is to see all the names that are mentioned. This a very different managers. Some of them are in projects with tailwinds, while others experience headwinds. Who we end up with seems very random at the moment. These managers will be responsible for completely different projects, says Holth.

The season is over in May. This means that Manchester United probably has six to seven months to find the right manager.

– They have bought time. When they hire Carrick as interim manager, while they are looking for a new interim manager, it probably says that it is not ready to hire a new permanent manager. Neither ten Hag nor Pochettino should be ready to enter the middle of the season, but both should be open to come after the season. That is probably the hope of the management, Holth believes.

– It seems as if there was chaos internally when Solskjær was to be removed

For the first time since the mid-1980s, Manchester United have gone four years without winning a trophy.

One of the main people responsible for this is director Ed Woodward. The 50-year-old announced on April 20 that he would resign at the turn of the year, but on Monday claimed Sky Sports that he is now considering postponing the dismissal.

– It is still not communicated when he will give up. It’s like being back in 2013. They lose the manager and the top manager. The owners also show no signs of what awaits. It is very difficult to believe that this club will be able to make a choice that will make them Premier League champions in the coming years.

– I do not see a single player who has developed

That’s what Eivind B. Holth says, who, like Stamsø-Møller, thinks the club management will be very bad after the weekend.

– The management does not come out well from this, but it is about the fact that they have missed another appointment, and most importantly, that they do not have a clear idea. It is still not known who will take over from Woodward. It also seems to have been a chaos internally with regard to the dismissal of Solskjær.

– A five-hour crisis meeting, where it was finally up to Joel Glazer to make the decision. Previously, Woodward has given Glazer his recommendation, while this time it has been more that Woodward would not fire Solskjær as the last thing he did, while Richard Arnold (director) probably did not want it to be the first thing he did, says Holth.

What is at least probably certain is that four different people will have something to do with the management of the club within the seven months. Solskjær, Carrick, temporary solution and finally the permanent solution.
