Mercedes is willing to take big risks in the battle for the 2022 world championship. According to the Italian branch ofMotorsport.com” href=”https://it.motorsport.com/f1/news/f1-mercedes-per-arginare-la-red-bull-si-spremono-le-power-unit/6670694/” target=”_blank”>Motorsport.com the German racing stable is currently investigating how far they can screw up the turbo of the Mercedes power unit, in order to corner Honda.
Currently, the engine manufacturers are no longer allowed to make ‘performance updates’. The power sources may only be tinkered with if there are updates in the field of safety or durability. Only from 2022 will the engine regulations be completely frozen, from that moment nothing can be changed at all. Although no updates may be made that are intended to generate more power, that does not mean that there is no extra power to be found at all. For example, if an engine supplier manages to make the engine more fuel efficient, they can get more power for the same amount of fuel.

Mercedes regularly loses out in the battle with Red Bull Racing and has now stopped developing the current car. After all, they have focused on 2022. However, the team from Brackley has certainly not given up the battle for both world titles in 2021. Mercedes seems to have a new trump in their hands. According to the usually well-informed Italian branch ofMotorsport.com” href=”https://it.motorsport.com/f1/news/f1-mercedes-per-arginare-la-red-bull-si-spremono-le-power-unit/6670694/” target=”_blank”>Motorsport.com Mercedes will now fully focus on the power source, in the hope that they can make a difference there. They not only want to try to increase their own capital, but also try to force Honda to make mistakes.
Mercedes willing to take a risk
Hywel Thomas, the general manager of Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains, is convinced that more power can still be extracted from the car. He states that it is possible to further increase certain parameters of the turbo system and the hybrid technology, without compromising reliability. Mercedes is therefore now investigating how far to screw up the engine’s turbo to force Honda to give chase. If Honda did indeed give chase, it could have a negative impact on the reliability of the Japanese engine. And that is exactly what Mercedes is after. Still, the reigning world champions are taking a big risk with this, because the chance that they themselves will have to deal with reliability problems is also considerable.
