Lewis Hamilton (2./2.)
The seven-time world champion is satisfied with the car’s development after training on his home track. Red Bull and Ferrari are said to be not far away.
“As far as driving comfort is concerned, the improvements don’t play much of a role. It’s a lot about downforce. After racing with low downforce on slow circuits, we moved on to medium and very fast circuits. The track here is beautifully smooth, a bit like in Barcelona.
Silverstone is the best circuit we have. The ride here gives you goosebumps. It’s an epic track and we have to fight with the car a bit on it. Our racing speed is still not up to the best, but we are not far off. So we’ve definitely improved in that regard. I believe we can get the car where we want it overnight.
Hopping is still a problem. It is not so noticeable on the straights, more so in the corners. It’s pretty rough. I don’t mean physically, rather it’s hard on the car and the tires. So we have a lot to improve, but small progress is there,” said Hamilton.
George Russell (no time/8th)
The young Brit perceives racing speed with a little more optimism. On the other hand, compared to Hamilton, he struggled more with less fuel.
“The larger amount of fuel fit me much better. It was similar to McLaren, which also used hard rubbers. We were much faster towards the end. When the tires warmed up, we were overtaking the Ferrari. Towards the end, their cars were slowing down, while we were still picking up speed.
So there are some positive signs. At the same time, there is room for improvement. At Copse, Maggots and Becketts the car bounces a lot, we need to find out what is causing it,” admitted Russell.
