In December last year, Mercedes-Benz became the first carmaker to receive official government approval for the introduction of Drive Pilot Level 3 in its S-Klasse and EQS models. The head of the German carmaker Ola Kalenius, during a speech at a conference dedicated to the announcement of the company’s financial results for 2021, said that the company is working to introduce a third-level autopilot in both American and European markets, such as this should happen this year.
According to Automotive News, the CEO of Mercedes-Benz explains that the company is currently testing the Drive Pilot system in the US and is also negotiating with local authorities on the requirements that will have to be met for the full launch of the technology. He did not provide further details, but noted that the carmaker is doing everything possible to make the Level 3 autopilot as widely available as possible. “Our goal is to introduce the technology this year,” Calenius promises.
With S-Class and EQS, the Level 3 Drive Pilot can operate in heavy traffic at speeds of up to 60 kilometers per hour. A level 3 autopilot vehicle can accelerate, decelerate and even change lanes without driver intervention. In Germany, the technology operates on certain sections of motorways with a total length of 13,191 kilometers. The system is activated by a special button on the steering wheel and allows the driver to take his hands off the steering wheel when driving on the highway. Approval of the system in the rest of Europe is pending.
