Mercedes introduces a small electric crossover EQA

German carmaker Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a small electric crossover called EQA. Unlike many other cars, however, it does not start with strong – and therefore expensive – variants, but with the ordinary version 250, whose front wheels are powered by 190 horsepower and 375 Nm.

In its bowels, it has a battery with a capacity of 66.5 kWh, which, according to the inaccurate and outdated NEDC measuring mode, is enough for a range of up to 486 km with an electricity consumption of 15.7 kWh / 100 km; according to the more realistic WLTP measuring cycle, the range is 426 km. How soon the range and consumption will be in the real world, it is soon to be estimated, both of which are very significantly affected by aerodynamic drag.

Its coefficient is 0.28, which is not an amazing number. The larger Tesla Model X has a coefficient of 0.25 and the Audi e-tron Sportback 0.26, if we stay with electric SUVs. However, it is interesting that the aerodynamics of the EQA were created entirely on a computer and the developers went to the wind tunnel only to confirm the calculations.

The basis of the body was the GLA model, but it underwent significant interventions to change the appearance and improve the already mentioned aerodynamics. It is worth noting the blind grilles in the bow, smoother lights or a luminous line at the stern, which the EQA visually links to a larger EQC.

In the cab, of course, there are a pair of displays, one as the instrument panel, the other as the main screen of the MBUX infotainment. It is of course connected to the Internet and can be paired with the application on the owner’s smartphone. We also see a steering wheel with touch sensors, a dedicated air conditioning control panel and a touchpad in the center tunnel to control the infotainment.

In terms of standard equipment, it is worth mentioning LED headlights with automatic remote switching, electric fifth door, 18 ”wheels or ambient lighting, which offers 64 colors. The heating is solved by a heat pump, which uses the waste heat from the battery, so in winter the range should not decrease by as much compared to less cold periods.

A smart feature is the navigation system, which can find the fastest way to your destination, including the time spent with chargers. It takes into account the profile of the route and the weather and also responds to the traffic situation or driving style of the driver.

Charging is possible with direct current with an output of up to 100 kW, which charges the battery from 10 to 80% in 30 minutes, or. 11kW onboard charger when using AC power. The car holds 340 liters of luggage in the basic arrangement and weighs 2040 kg empty. It is 4463 mm long, 1834 mm wide and 1620 mm high.

The carmaker already promises to launch even more powerful variants, which will output more than 270 horsepower, as well as versions with all-wheel drive. So far, the only available version of 250 costs in Germany from 47,540 euros, ie from 1.24 million crowns.
