Due to the chip shortages in the car sector, manufacturers are focusing more on cars with a high added value, and therefore the more expensive models. In addition, the entry-level models, the A-class, also became more expensive by offering them with numerous options. In this way, car manufacturers can maintain their profits, writes Bloomberg. The electrification of the vehicle fleet threatens to put even more pressure on affordability.
By focusing on luxury, 2022 was a good year for Mercedes-Benz. Turnover increased by 12 percent to 150 billion euros. Sales of top models from the S-class, AMG and the luxury brand Maybach in particular picked up. Profit from continuing operations (ie excluding Daimler Truck) was a third higher at EUR 14.8 billion. The company proposes a gross dividend of 5.2 euros per share.
For 2023, the car manufacturer is less optimistic. CEO Ola Källenius expects slightly less profit this year. Prices are expected to rise a bit, but sales are expected to lag those of last year. In addition, the forecast is subject to “extraordinary uncertainty,” it said.
